Why ReliefApp was Created

Why ReliefApp was Created

Why ReliefApp was Created

Fitness needs to be accessible by everyone.

As you grow into a more modern culture where sitting for 8 hours a day is a prerequisite to success, your body gets tighter, weaker, and movement can begin to be more challenging, painful, daunting, or scary. You need to counteract that with an efficient movement program that allows you to still take walks on the weekend with your spouse and loved ones, keep up with your kids and their sports, or be the true weekend warrior you were born to be, all without having to ignore some nagging pain that drives you up the wall. With that, I spent every minute of my free time (outside of a full time personal training schedule and chasing my 2 little boys around) developing these strategies and application that anyone can use, so you can get back to doing what you love.

The Theory

The Theory

Creating a '1 size fits all' approach to a wide range of injuries was difficult, so we dialed back to the main elements of injury: tightness around a joint that's supposed to be mobile can create too much movement in the stable joints nearby, and a higher risk for injury overall.

The Joint By Joint Approach

The Joint By Joint Approach

The Joint By Joint Approach

The Joint By Joint Approach states that all joints (starting at the feet and going all the way up to the head and out to the hands) alternate between stable and mobile joints. This is what it looks like:

  • The foot needs to be stable.

  • The ankle needs to be mobile.

  • The knee needs to be stable.

  • The hip needs to be mobile.

  • The low back (lumbar spine) needs to be stable.

  • The mid and upper back (thoracic spine) need to be mobile.

  • The neck (cervical spine) needs to be stable.

  • The shoulder blade (scapula-thoracic joint) needs to be stable.

  • The shoulder needs to be mobile.

  • The elbow needs to be stable.

  • The wrist needs to be mobile.

  • The hand needs to be stable.

- If your calves are tight and you take a 5 mile walk without stretching, your feet and knees could be in pain by the end of the walk.

- If your shoulder gets tight, you might experience a pain in your elbow or shoulder blade area the next time you try to do bench press or pushups.

How Exactly Do We Tighten Up?

How Exactly Do We Tighten Up?

How Exactly Do We Tighten Up?

Have you ever noticed discomfort after a long day of sitting or standing? There are a lot of ways to develop an injury, but often times, its from a lack of movement. Sitting the majority of the day reduces blood flow to your glutes and hamstrings (and lower body overall). Having your hands hovering over a mouse and keyboard all day causes your wrists and shoulders to get tight. If you get tired while doing all of this, your posture breaks down and you begin to slouch. You develop tightness through your hips, shoulders, knees, ankles, wrists, and upper back.

Based on the Joint By Joint Approach, when one area (your hips) gets tight from sitting, a stable joint in the area (your knees and/or lower back) has to become more mobile to compensate for the tightness developed, and exposes the entire region to injury. Most times, an injury occurs in the 'weakest link' of the area. We have taken this into account and have based our pain relief programs around the root cause of the problem, rather than addressing the symptom, or the 'weakest link'.

The Plan

We also knew ReliefApp needed to easily fit into a busy lifestyle, so we only picked the most effective movements per pain area to optimize time spent. Taking it a step further, we also developed an algorithm that would only pick the most effective movements from the original program, and package them into a time saving routine that you can access and complete anywhere. We use rolling and trigger point techniques, stretching, and exercises to address the root cause of the issue (mobility) and stabilize the surrounding areas. For most workouts, your custom protocol also serves well as your warmup before working out. Start your journey to a pain-free life with ReliefApp today.
